Marcus Clark is Louisiana's newest Supreme Court justice. On Thursday, Clark took his oath of office much the same way he campaigned for the seat -- with a display of his experience as a deputy, prosecutor and judge. Hundreds of people attended the swearing-in ceremony at the Monroe Civic Center's Jack Howard Theatre and heard his former colleagues voice their praise and congratulations.

By a vote of 59-39, the Senate confirmed President Obama's first judicial nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit this evening. Judge David Hamilton's nomination proceeded past a threatened filibuster earlier this week when the Senate voted for cloture 70-29. Details of the confirmation vote are available here .

The 70-29 vote limited debate over the qualifications of U.S. District Judge David Hamilton of Indiana, and assured his elevation to the Chicago-based appeals court. Sixty votes were needed to end the filibuster, but confirmation only requires a simple majority of the 100-member Senate. The vote emphatically warned Republicans that with only 40 senators, they're too outnumbered to prevent Obama from making major inroads into a judiciary that was populated over eight years with conservative judges chosen

Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., defended Indiana Judge David Hamilton on Monday against criticism from fellow GOP senators that Hamilton is outside the mainstream. The Senate is expected to vote today on whether to prevent a GOP filibuster of President Barack Obama's nomination of Hamilton, a U.S. district judge, to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court is the last stop before the Supreme Court for cases from Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.
